Invisalign 101: what it does and why you should consider it

These days, more and more people are looking for a way to treat malocclusions (or teeth that are not properly aligned) for both aesthetic and oral health reasons. This is why clear aligners are becoming more popular than traditional braces.

Invisalign is the brand that doctors recommend for clear aligners, and it allows you to work closely with your provider to get the fit and changes that suit you. Every set of Invisalign aligners is created specifically for your mouth. As the aligners work to relocate your teeth, you’re given new aligners periodically until you finally have your new smile.

Many want this option because it’s easier and more aesthetically pleasing than braces. But it’s important to realize that you’ll need to take care of your Invisalign to get the best benefits possible.

Caring for your Invisalign aligners

First, you’ll need to wear your Invisalign at the right time. Make sure you wear them around 22 hours a day. Yes, this means you’ll wear them while you sleep! You’ll only want to take them off to eat and brush your teeth.

We must reiterate this critical information: Do not eat or drink while wearing your aligners! You may drink plain water but nothing else. It is also a good idea to clean your teeth after every meal before putting your aligners back in.

When cleaning your teeth, you’ll need to abide by the typical oral health regimen. But you’ll also need to clean your aligners. First, rinse them off, then use gentle toothpaste to clean them. You can also use a soft-bristled toothbrush to more easily clean in the hard-to-reach places on your Invisalign aligners.

Another great way to care for your aligners is to soak them for 15 minutes daily. You can do this while eating to ensure you’re still wearing your Invisalign as often as possible.

Finally, if you take your aligners out for any reason — and you’re not cleaning or soaking them — store them inside the case they come with. If you don’t, the aligners can get dirty, warped, damaged, or even thrown away accidentally!

Should you get Invisalign?

Invisalign is a wonderful option for teens and adults who want to fix malocclusions. However, it’s important to be aware of the important care aspects of utilizing this treatment. If you think you’ll be able to care for your aligners properly, then Invisalign could be a great choice!
